Shortly before Christmas, it occurred to me that the hassle encountered when trying to play a game with my eldest son (I have two computers, but they are located on separate floors of the house) could be reduced or removed with the proper application of some of the unused hardware lying about the house. Therefore, I undertook to build a simple monitor stand for our main computer which would also extend to create an ancillary, attached desk with a computer fitted into the desk frame. Here is a shot of the desk in its entirety as a selection of cut boards, prior to staining, treating and assembly:
I used small 1/4x1/4 wood strips to attach guides on the desk structure which help hold the hardware in place. I also notched the keyboard tray so that it would fit around the HSU and GPU.
I used wire mesh to enclose the computer area of the desk and keep little fingers from getting caught in fans or exposed electrical connections. This computer is very vulnerable to any sort of spill, though, and liquids are not allowed near the desk.
The computer system as a whole (sans hard drive) is mounted to a metal backplane cut from a cheap, existing PC case. It can slide in an out from the back of the desk.
The entire setup is cooled by two massive 200mm Thermaltake Pure 20 fans which are mounted to a plate of plexiglass securing the PC in place.
The fully completed assembly is visible through the mesh ventilation behind the integrated keyboard tray. The mouse pad I selected was a little too large for this very small tray, but instead of cutting it to fit, I screwed it into the mesh fitting.
Here is a final picture of the monitor stand/desk wrapping over the existing computer desk in our living room. The monitor used for PosAlt is not present in this picture because it was given as a Christmas gift to the boys, but hadn't been unwrapped yet.
The computer has the following specifications:
PSU: Corsair CX450M
MOBO: ASUS M4A785-M
CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 720BE Unlocked
HSU: Scythe Katana3
RAM: G.Skill 4GB DDR2 1066
GPU: EVGA nVidia GeForce 9800 GT
HDD: Samsung 840 EVO 120GB
OS: Windows 10 Home
